Nikon Z7

Sorry for the yet another "will you support my camera" thread. The Nikon Z7's not yet shipping so this is a bit premature ...

As a Nikon NPS member I will get priority shipping when it does ship so I hope to have a Z7 mid-October to replace my D800E for studio use. Its USB3 connectivity seems very similar to the D800e and will work with Nikon Camera Control 2.

Soooo .. my obvious question is whether you anticipate supporting the Z7 when it's released? If so, how long after a new camera is released is an update typically released? I'm also using Helicon Remote for Android which supports the D800E.

Thanks for any info.

So far we have no plans to support Nikon mirrorless cameras. Nikon V-series had some remote control capabilities but its control protocol was much different from DSLRs, and it lacked some features, so we deemed supporting it impractical. After Z7 is released, we'll be able to see what it can do. If you want to see this camera supported, you could contact us after you have it, we can work together to see what can be done and assess the possibility of making Helicon Remote work with this model.

Thanks for the reply Stas. I should have the camera in a couple of weeks and will be in touch.

Note that the Z is much different from the Nikon1 system as it's DNA (and price) is very pro dSLR. It has the same connectivity (Wifi, Bluetooth, USB3) as the other Nikon pro cameras and will work with Nikon Camera Control 2 in the same way as the D3,D4,D5 and the D800, D810 and D850. It's a 45mp camera that I'm sure many pros will use tethered as a studio tool, as well as a silent addition to their dSLR bodies. Cambo is producing an 'Actus' system and I'm confident CaptureOne 11 and Adobe Lightroom will offer tethered control soon after the Z7's official release on Sept. 27.

I suspect adapting Helicon Remote for the Z7 will be no more challenging than any of the other Nikon pro bodies. It uses all the same lenses.

The V series was not designed by Nikon as a pro tool and did not provide any tethering option.

I,too, hope supporting Z7 will not be difficult for the same reasons you've listed. We'll see once we have the actual camera to test against. Please send a mail to heliconsoft@gmail.com once you have the camera and we'll get in touch with you right a way with an updated version of Helicon Remote to test.

Thanks to everyone willing to help out. We're not actively working on Z7 support right now as we need to finish some other stuff first, like support for new Canon cameras that requires us to re-write significant portions of important code. Once we start working on Z7, I'll let everyone know in this forum thread.

hi...
please add me to your list of very eager customers hoping for Z7 support.
i have purchased a lifetime license for helicon remote/focus...which i dont regret for a moment:)...
but being able to use your excellent product on my z7 would be hugely helpful.
i’d be glad to offer beta testing or anything else that might be useful.
thanks very much!

Noted. But we're not yet at the point where we can start working on Z7 support. When it changes, we'll make some sort of an announcement.
