Canon 5D Mk III is fully supported. It's difficult to guess which one of a couple potential root causes for this problem is in play here based on such a concise description, but I'd say there is a conflict with some other camera-related software. This is especially plausible if you're on Mac, which seems to be the case since you mentioned Fire Wire. To solve the problem, find and terminate that other software that attempts to access the camera. Could be another remote control program, could be a simple image import tool or an image viewer. Any program capable of detecting a camera can trigger this issue, and only one such program may be running at any time.
A faulty USB cable or loose connector can also cause these symptoms, but that's much less likely.
