How are customs handled when delivering to Germany?

Hello all,
my name is Markus, and I am new to the forum. Before I can ask stupid questions about how to shoot with FB tube I need to buy one, and before I buy one I want to have this question answered:
Can anybody tell me how taxes (de: Zoll) are handled when the FB tube is delivered to Germany? I am not worried about paying taxes, but when I received items from abroad (outside EU) in the past they were delivered to the customs office in the town nearby, and I had to pick them up during their office hours (and pay the taxes).
Also the delivery time offers a bit of a span. 20-40 working days are 2-4 months, and I may not be at home to collect my parcel from the customs office all the time (I have made sure that the postman can always deliver my parcels).
