Shooting a stack for a macro

Post by KenEis »

In my photoclub we have an arguement about the best way to shoot a stack for Helicon processing.
1. Use manual focus and shoot by incrementaly adjusting the focus.
2. Use manual focus but don't touch it. Instead use a rail focusing attachment on your tripod and incrementall vary the distance to the subject.

I've tried both of these method and both work but is there a preferred method?
