Manfrotto Focus Rack Review

Post by TomMeeks »

I thought it might be useful to give some brief observations regarding the Manfrotto focus rack. I'm not even sure they still manufacture this item since I can't find it on the Manfrotto web site. BHPhoto still lists it in their stock.

While I have generally been pleased with most of the Manfrotto items I've purchased, the Focus Rack is one that has to fall into the 'less then pleased' column.

The screw mechanism's machining seems to be very coarse. While it doen't bind, there is a LOT of movement from side to side as the rack's screw is turned... almost as if the shaft were bent. Fortunately, Helicon Focus can deal with the image misalignment that results.

I'm actually quite surprised with the lack of smoothness as a result of poor workmanship inherent in this product. I'd try something else before buying a Manfrotto.

Unfortunately, I have no alternative suggestion nor any other focus rack with which to compare it. But, there has GOT to be something better out there. Useable? Yes. Fun? NO!

I'd love to hear about other brands of focus racks that others are using.

The Pentax version might actually be better. But, I've not had any experience with it. The Novaflex is more expensive; but, looks very nice.

Finally, there is the Adorama version. Again, I haven't had any experience at all with it.
