Hi,
I'm just getting around to trying to set up Focus to shoot some self portraits. I have previous experience using a Joopic Cambuddy to do this with a D800, but using Focus with a D850 is a new setup for me.
What I want to do, is keep the RAW images on the camera, so I can load them into my computer's DAM after the shoot. However while shooting, I want to be able to use my iPad to access live view, get focus locked to eyes etc, and then review the image after it's taken.
What's the best combination of settings to achieve this?
My initial experiments, it looked like Focus had set my camera to shooting in jpeg mode (it's normally set to shoot RAW only - it took a while to remember how to set it back to RAW). Do I need to manually set it to shoot NEF and JPG to separate cards, in order to get a jpeg review image to the iPad, while keeping a NEF on the camera?
Thanks.

Re: D850: advice for managing live view shooting images
Hi,
JPEG is forced if you don't have a license, and the 30-day trial period has ended. But even then, JPEG is only selected for the shortest possible duration of time while the shot is being taken, and then restored back to your original selected image format. Your camera will actually be set to raw, unless you unplug it or kill the app right as the shot was being fired.
Is there something else that didn't work?

Oh, I have the lifetime licence, which is showing under purchases, and I'm evidently logged in under the sign in menu.
I did power cycle the camera because it seemed to be frozen after shooting, I think it might have been trying to copy a RAW over.
That said, what settings should I use to get the outcome I'm after, so I can test again and at least know I've set the thing up correctly. For example, can I see the post-shot playback in Focus, or do I have to jump over to Photos after each shot?
thanks,

Then just tap the image format selector on the Exposure tab and choose RAW. Or pre-select it in the camera. Helicon Remote will never change your image format as long as you have a license, which you do.
You can go to the menu - Preferences - Saving, and choose "Leave in the camera" for raw and "Move to computer" for JPEG. The default is to download both. Are you using Wi-Fi or USB connection? Raw images might take a while to download over Wi-Fi, should be a lot faster over USB, but either way should work fine, it's just that Wi-Fi is slower.
And yes, you will get a post-shot review if you selected RAW+JPEG and use the saving settings I recommended above.

I was using Wifi, but if I can skip that and just plug a cable in, that would no doubt make things less problematic. Would this Apple adapter (which I already have) work?Catherine wrote: ↑17.06.2025 12:05 You can go to the menu - Preferences - Saving, and choose "Leave in the camera" for raw and "Move to computer" for JPEG. OK - so is this a setting I need to configure on the Camera; setting it to shoot Raw+JPEG to make both versions available to Helicon Remote, or is this just a setting within Helicon Remote, which leaves my camera shooting RAW-only after I disconnect?
I guess I'm trying to figure out conceptually where it's driven from - Is Remote working with what the camera is pre-configured to supply, or is Remote controlling what file versions the camera creates?
Cheers,

You can pre-select RAW+JPEG in the camera, or you can select it in Helicon Remote, the result will be the same. It will not be rolled back to a different format, if you made changes in Helicon Remote - the camera will be left with these changes after it's disconnected.
