Sony A7RV and macbook pro running Helicon Remote tethered with a cable does not connect. The camera is found, but the total HR screen is greyed out - I assume that means it cannot read the data from the camera. I think it is menu settings in the camera. Do you know the menu settings that are needed? Are there any other tips to correct the lack of connection?

Please send a bug report when the software is in this state: menu - Help - Report a bug.
Also, make sure any other software that could possibly access the camera is not running (even in the background), e. g. Imaging Edge, Capture One, Lightroom, Photos, etc. Quit everything of this sort first, only then run Helicon Remote.

As for settings, there is one: the USB mode must be set to "PC Remote" in the camera menu.

I'm pretty sure this setting exists, please look again. The selection is something like: MSC, MTP, PC Remote - you need the latter.
There is also the setting "USB LUN" that maybe should be set to "Single", we don't know for sure if it's required or not.

New to Helicon Remote. While it's connecting to the camera, and LiveView shows, it doesn't seem to be able to control focus at all.

Clicking on the << buttons such as "Medium to Camera" shows like it's stepping thru the progress type bar, but changes nothing. If I manually focus from the lens, I can set nearest/farthest, but the app won't change focus at all. The number of shots does update, and start shooting will take that number of images, but they're all at the same focus point.

Firmware 4.0
Lens: 100m GM Macro.

Update: same behavior with the 90mm Sony macro
what lens are other a7rv users using?

Make sure the lens switch is set to AF, and that in the menu - File - Preferences - Sony, the focusing step size is set to "Big".

Lens is in AF mode, both the switch, and the focus ring pushed forward. But connecting the app/laptop switches the camera to MF. Changing the step-size has no affect.

This is correct, everything on the software side is working properly. We don't know what the problem is, sorry.
