calculate required shots for given subject

If I know the step size (20, for example) and the depth of my subject (a 3 inch flower, for example), is there a way to calculate the approximate number of shots that would be required? Thanks for any information.

I found a way. Set the step size, shoot a ruler, count the images to get a given distance in focus, then divide. Step size 50, 12 inch ruler, 60 shots= 5 shots per inch +/-. At the same distance from the subject and step size, 5 shots per inch should provide a good estimate.

Your calculations are correct, that would work. But only as long as the distance to subject remains roughly the same.
