8.1.1 with OpenCL slower than 8.1.0

Post by RCinNJ »

Hello, I hope you are all safe!

I just updated to MacOS 12.4 so I could try version 8.1.1. After enabling OpenCL acceleration I restarted my computer and then reopened HeliconFocus and ran the Benchmark. It ran in 10.98 seconds and had a comparison score of 192. This is slower than with 8.1.0 where yesterday it was under 10 seconds and had a score of 240. I reinstalled 8.1.0 and ran the test again. The score was slightly lower, 10.35 seconds and 203, but still faster than 8.1.1 with OpenCL acceleration.

I have attached a screenshot of my Performance tab for 8.1.1 so you can see my settings.

Is there anything I should do or is this still not working at 100% efficiency?

Thank you,
Ric Cohn

Hello Ric,

203 and 192 is well within the margin of run to run variation, it's not a statistically significant difference. I'm also surprised you are able to run 8.1.0 on macOS 12.4 with OpenCL enabled.

Turn your Mac off for about 15 minutes, let it cool off, then try 8.1.1 again. I suspect you're getting higher results when the GPU is cold and it boosts to higher clock speed, but it warms up it has to reduce the clock speed (and hence reduce performance).
