After stacking I tried to save the resultant image and got
*Failed to save image. Cannot open file for writing"
Any ideas to resolve this would be welcome

Please send a bug report after this problem occurs (menu - Help - Report a bug). We can't troubleshoot this just by the message text.
Have you tried saving to a different location, e. g. to your Pictures folder?

Sending bug repair gives
Failed to send the bug report: Error transferring https://www.heliconsoft.com/support/bugreport.php - server replied: Internal Server Error

Sorry for the trouble, there was indeed an issue on our end, it's fixed now and you can send the report.
Have you tried saving to a different folder or a different volume / disk?
