Pixel 9a: Difficulty Connecting to Canon 5d iii

Seemingly the only way to get Helicon Remote to detect the camera is to connect the cable, then open and close Helicon several times until I see that it opened in landscape mode with all the buttons greyed out. If it opens in portrait mode, it has not and will not connect, and I need to force quit and reopen it any number of times, sometimes ten+. If it connects and I close Helicon (by eg going to recent apps and swiping it away), then the dance resumes - again I must open and close it an indeterminate number of times to reconnect.
The cable is fine, the system sees the camera correctly every time/the whole time. Can eg browse files on camera.
I have closed all other apps, as suggested in another thread, then connected the camera, waited, then attempted to open Helicon. I have tried every combination of order of operations for plugging the cable, turning on the camera, and opening Helicon.
This is not really a feasible procedure to have to go through every time; it is extremely tedious. Did not have this issue with DSLR Controller, but unfortunately it's not around anymore.
This is on a Pixel 9a running Android 15. Helicon Remote is 4.5.5 (latest from app store). Camera is 5d mark III, firmware 1.2.3.
