I have another question. In certain areas, often defined by flat transparent mineral cristals, Helicon (or my skills) are unable to define detail and give me a flat area. I suspect certain colors are partly responsible. It's not due to a lack of photos; I take many more photos than necessary to be sure I don't have banding. Is there a solution for this?

Impossible to know what's wrong without seeing the stack, but try resetting the autoadjustment settings (click the Reset button on the settings page), also reset the stacking parameters by right-clicking the Smooting/Radius sliders, and try different rendering methods.
