When I pull images in from the photo browser, the file size is decreased. Then when I render the file gets even smaller. If I export the NEF files as jpegs then upload from the desktop, then everything works fine. Any chance of getting this bug fixed?

Small files means that NEF files are not properly converted. If you are using Mac version, have a look if other applications like iPhoto do open the files in full resolution. If not, you will need to update OS to add support for your files.
If you are using Windows version, try different RAW convertors in the Preferences window.
