Error trying to set close focus Nikon D700

I have submitted a bug report, but was hoping to get a quicker resolution in case it is just some setting that I am missing and not a bug.
I get this error on both the stable and beta version.
I am trying to evaluate prior to purchase.
Version 2.3.14 and current beta.
Nikon D700, manual mode, 60mm micro auto focus.
MacBook Pro OS 10.6.8 2 ghz intel core i7, 4gb 1333 mhz
I get an error as pictured when attempting to set close focus point.
I can still shoot a 10 stack (without any focus changing) and switch in and out of live view and preview.
I don't see a setting anywhere for tripod or handheld as has been mentioned in other posts. Not sure if that applies to the current version or not as the posts that mentioned this setting did not mention the version they were working with.
Any ideas please.
