I am using a Nikon D7000 with a Samsung Galaxy SIII

Is there a User Manual for Helicon Remote?

I'm having the same issue. Also using D7000 but in combination with HTC One X +. I get the same error message and the arrow buttons that should shift focus back and forth do not work. I did exactly what the manual said. I also looked at YouTube footage to check if I did something wrong. Is this a camera specific issue?

Resetting camera body settings should help.
