Distance moved on stackshot

Not really a problem, just an inquiry. When shooting an object that is about 1cm deep, in order to focus on the top and then the bottom the camera moves almost the entire length of the rail (a lot more than 1 cm). I would have thought the two distances would be the same; maybe my understanding of the optics is just not that good.
