I just read in a forum that said Method A is not the best for long stacks? How do I determine which method is optimal for any given set of images? Can anyone point me to a tutorial or such so I can read up on the various Methods & Preferences and when/how to adjust them?

you have to experiment. i almost always get best results with B, give C a try, and don't waste my time with A. but that is me.
