Helicon Focus 6.2 Retouch stopped working

it just simply quit.
after fooling with it for a while, i uninstalled HF6.2 and shut the machine down. restarted and reloaded HF6.2. same problem. so i ran the demo stack. same problem there.
the application renders as always. but i can't do a retouch. since all of my work is based on HF and since it always requires a retouch, i am out of commission at this point.
