New feature : Canon's legacy DEPTH mode for all

Post by D600vince »

Hi,

Focus stacking is great, but obviously only works for static subjects.

In the past, Canon's SLR had a terrific feature called depth mode (why they ditch it is beyond me). In that mode you'd focus on frontmost point A, and then on the farthest point B. Then the camera would compute the ideal focus distance and aperture so, according to DOF law, point A, and B and all in between would be sharp (encompassed in the depth of filed).

That's much better than hyperfocal, because it limits the focus to just the choosed elements.

You've got the math, you've got the program, you even have the GUI in the focus zone. Near the focus stacking button, a depth button would be great. it will be a terrific feature to add.

Yes, I know that in many case the depth of field won't be able to encompass all. Just dimm the depth button then.

P.S : Of course make it work for my D600 :-)

Unfortunately, it is not possible for two reasons:
a) we have no way of knowing the actual focus position in any absolute scale. We only know distance between A and B in some abstract units, which leads us to
b) even if we knew absolute position in abstract units, the relation between these units and actual physical units is specific for every camera body/lens combination.

Even if camera's firmware has access to some information that makes such calculations possible, this information is not exposed to remote client.
