My first question is, what is the purpose of the "DPI in the output image" setting in preferences? Whether I set it to 300 or 600, my tif has the same 607.9 MB file size and 11622x8716 dimensions, but the resolution does change from 300x300 to 600x600 accordingly. Is it for instructing the printer?
My second question is, is it normal to take over 30 minutes to load a project file? My stack consists of 14 tif files that are each 611.4 MB, and I have quite a bit of retouching. I am using a MacBook Pro M4 Max with 128 GB memory and 4 TB storage.
Can I save project files to external storage in order to recall them in the future? Will I want to move them back to the local drive?
Thank you.
A couple of newbie questions
Re: A couple of newbie questions
Hello,
1. It literally just sets the "dpi" (dots per inch) EXIF tag. Yes, this is for those times where you might need to relate your pixels to physical dimensions, e. g. for printing.
2. Depends on your hardware. The number of images in a stack doesn't matter, the number of brush strokes does, as well as the brush parameters. I wouldn't expect M4 to take that long, though. Could you give us any such long loading project to study? 5 minutes would be long enough, and we don't care what the contents of the images is, can be anything.
3. You can save the project anywhere, but the source image files need to be available when the project is loaded. If, for example, you save the project into the same folder as the source images, or into a sub-folder of the source folder, the project will store relative paths, so if you move it along with the source images it will still load from any location (including on other computers).
If there's no clear relation between the project location and source images location, absolute paths will be used.

Re: A couple of newbie questions
I only have the one project currently. What would be the method of giving you the project to study?
Re: A couple of newbie questions
Please put it into a folder with every source image used by the project, compress the folder to a ZIP archive, and upload to our private storage.
Re: A couple of newbie questions
I uploaded 3 zip files. Does the link you provided identify me as the source?
If you need it, the following is the paths of the files:

Re: A couple of newbie questions
Thank you, I got the files. Just looking at the amount of retouching and the size of the project file, I can say that yes, it probably is normal that it takes 30 minutes to load, but we'll see if we can improve that.
Re: A couple of newbie questions
Thank you.
The project I sent you had more retouching done, so it took about 40 minutes to open.
Are there setting that you would suggest that would have resulted in less need for retouching?

Re: A couple of newbie questions
That depends on which part of the image you're focusing on. I see all your renders were with the method B, but C yields a drastically better result in the overlaps between the leaves and the far away scenery.
