Photo Errors on Turntable Setup – What’s the Cause?

Post by PoloxDisc »

Out of 73 photos, 6 have errors. I’ve tried various settings, but nothing seems to help. What could be the cause of this?
I’m using a turntable, adjusting the focus with helicon remote, and taking photos — nothing else.

What is the error? What's wrong with these 6 photos?

I encountered some issues with the edges of my model. In attached I giving a couple of examples with close-up and I'm curious why this is happening. Changing the settings didn’t help much—usually, increasing the radius worked for other images to make similar effects disappear. I'm not really sure what is cousing this error and how to avoide it in the future.

I see, the fact that there is a double edge on the top, but the other sides of the subjects are fine, suggests that maybe the point of view changed during shooting, i. e. not all images in a stack are shot from the same point of view. Or maybe the subject has been moved. In both of these cases that's not a valid focus stack.

It should be easy to see what the problem is if you scroll through all of the images using the Page Down button after rendering the stack. And watch how the source images are aligned (positioned).

I take photos using a helicon remote, increasing or decreasing focus bracketing by pressing the left and right arrows, while the model rotates on an automated turntable. Everything is done remotely, so I highly doubt the object is moving in any way. Is that the only possible explanation? The only thing that comes to mind is some minimal movement of the surface the bottle was placed on, which might have caused a barely noticeable motion during photography after automatic turnining, but I'm not sure...

You need to scroll through the source images in this stack (all of them, don't skip and don't go too fast) to see the outliers that cause this issue. Then you can start thinking about how it happened. I'm pretty sure you will found an outlier using the method I described above; if not - let me know.

For example, these two photos. Why does this issue occur?

I can't completely eliminate it in hundreds of photos. A larger radius helps in most cases, but in this particular instance, a smaller radius works better. However, I still can't fully remove it.

I rendered the stack out of the 12 images you provided, and I don't get this artifact. And not with just the images 5+6 either.
Go to your Helicon Focus preferences - Autoadjustments, click Reset, then OK. Reset the smoothing and radius to their default values by right-clicking the sliders, and render again.
